Being the mischievous kid that he is, Kossak can be found doing the sideways shuffle over your border lines in demonstration of their easy manipulation. His parents chose his American name to be Lucas. It has something to do with the Italian luce, or light. They probably had a great sense of humor and had written too many high school essays throwing around words like "juxtapose" because he in reality prefers the darkness, hence the color of this text (and the color of his socks). At a very young and impressionable age, his parents decided that the city of Oakland would be a nice change of pace from his anole-infested playground of Texas. He has decided in his older years that this was probably a "hella good idea," as he met his fellow comrades Kush Arora and Brian English in high school P.E. class. Lucas and Kush began concocting some real fucked up music with only a couple of crappy computers, effects units, microphones and lots of breakable items. Through Kush he met Robbie Martin (Fluorescent Grey), T.bias (5000fingers) and Anthony Godoy (DJ Alias). Together they tore through eardrums alongside music acts like Negativland, Kid606, Blevin Blectum, Wobbly, Big City Orchestra, and Lumin. Involution (Kush, Lucas and Anthony) had several releases on Ovenguard Records. Lucas continued making avant-garde music with Kush under the new alias of Clairaudience. They had a release on Tabula Rasa Records.
Lucas quickly became addicted to rocking out to obscure albums from Central Asian nomads, Indonesian gamelan gurus, duduk playing Armenians, African herdsmen, and many other worldlies. These vibrant new sounds mingled with jazz, funk, dub and hip hop like horny teens in that little head of his. These raunchy encounters led to the erection of his unique style, like an Obelisk on the river Nile. Using live instrumentation (he plays the Suling, Mizmar, Arghul, Hulusi, nose whistle and he frequently claps), field recording, sound design and computer production he began creating songs unlike anything ever heard. At least this is what he tells himself, a sort of patting-himself-on-the-back routine.
In 2003 Lucas joined the RLR crew under the alias of Ruperto Marquez and most recently Kossak. His style can be described as a hyper-surgical sound design-infused minimal beat music with dub and eastern influences. He treats each sound he uses like a sacred object EQing, compressing and mixing each one individually as if it were a final song. This is part of why Lucas has such a unique style, and his music is impeccably well mixed. He also has a knack for frequently making entire drum kits from scratch using tiny snippets of random everyday sounds. So far Lucas has only graced us with 2 tracks on the 'Ghos Busters III' compilation, but RLR will surely be lighting a fire under his ass for a soon to be released Kossak 12".
