Reverse Engineering Autechre
statement by robbie/fluorescent grey:
this page was originally created as
childish retaliation for Autechre
speaking badly about me & Record label records in an interview. Now it has become a
genuine educational tool and resource for Autechre fans who want to
get a peak behind the curtain. Enjoy!
On a side note: from reading the interview numerous times i have
gathered that Sean Booth did not realize that Ben (the great white
hype) and myself are the ones who made the beheading hoax video. We
were equating it to the 'Untilted' album hoax because of the means
and ease of getting the beheading hoax spread on the internet

Updates -
1/15/07 - RLR releases it's first commercial software packge on CD
including exclusive more advanced generative and experimental
maxmsp / reaktor patches here
7/20/06 - Put up info about reverse engineering the Confield
patch
7/19/06 - Better Russian - English translation found for EP7
patch.
Want to know where we found it.....the H20 bundle of the Autechre
patch of course! That's right, the sound warez releasing group has
distributed their very own version of the EP7 patch.
7/15/06 - We want to make clear that Russian electronic group Fizzarum
, was the original source for the EP7 patch. On
their website you can also find a another patch made by
Gescom.
At this point we cannot get the patch working. We will post any
developments as they occour.
4/38/06 - We were asked to take the Confield patch down by someone
we respect deeply who wishes to remain anonymous. We will hopefully
be able to describe what it does and have someone do a writeup of
it, The EP7 patch will still remain available.
3/9/06 - Sean booth argues with someone who accuses autechre of copying
one of his patches on the maxmsp mailing list. Thanks to
Justin Magness the original conversation can be found here

SORRY WE HAVE TAKEN THE PATCH OFF THE SITE.
"The only thing that is a trademark autechre sound in the
patch that i can somewhat "figure out" is the rapid fire
bass drum
components. It appears as though they are using a saw
tooth wave ramp combined with a gui sequencer as an LFO to speed up
a
somewhat randomly influenced bass drum pattern. Then on top of
this they are using another sequencer (2nd one on the gui) to make
the higher pitched rapid fire bass drum parts "play" a
melody. Its a pretty amazing technique, and it still blows my mind
even after taking a peak behind the curtain. The idea of a
percussive sound becoming so fast that it becomes a tone, and then
playing that tone in a melodic fashion in real time is an incredibly
creative idea. And not only that but it doesnt sound too obvious,
they arent just straight up speeding up a metro until it makes a
tone, they are creating a unique and squelchy synth timbre that is
very pleasing to the ears."

" what made their patching interesting wasn't the low-level
component parts, but how decisions about events and control
information are routed [something that's a good deal more
difficult to reverse engineer, and which would not necessarily
yield great insights into form, by the way]. That
would be both considerably more accurate, and
- I think - more "on point" in terms of
thinking about the relationship between tools and technique as
they approach them. Having looked at the work, the insight that
emerges for me is that they don't reduce to their
tools - there are a considerable number of
people of whom this might be said, but I think
it's a bit off mark when they're considered. The lack of MSP
in their recent work would suggest that, I think. "

Fluorescent Grey reverse
engineered Autechre Reaktor versions
note: You need Reaktor 4.13, 5 or higher to open
these patches. To load ISM files you
must open up a reaktor session, click and drag them on the background of the
structure. Once they have been placed in the reaktor structure
view you must use a mixer which can be found here to play them
together. I have set it up as individual instruments such as
bass drum, snare drum, etc for you to have more control over the
output. I decided not to completely clone the already exsisting
patches, so here is a more Chichlisuite version with less dissonant
melodies. A complete demonstration of what all of the instruments
sound like together is also up on the page.

About the gui: This is not
meant to be a learning tool *yet*. It is messy, takes up over 10
screens even at a 1280x1024 resolution, and is not labeled in a easy
to understand way. Eventually i will make it easier to comprehend
what each device is doing, but until then i advise you download
the individual components to pick apart what's going on.

For next time....
where the hell do we get ahold of these -

according to a recent
article in Sound on Sound, these pictures you see above are the
current Autechre maxmsp music boxes. Unfortunately we cant tell at
all what they do since all the functionally is hidden/locked. Just
looking at these screenshots has given all of us here at RLR a
collective erection.
